It's Picnic Time

The sun is shining, the birds are singing and the Pimms is free-flowing. It’s almost fate that this is all going on during National Picnic Week, don’t you think? We all love a good ol’ picnic, so it seems only appropriate to share with you some fascinating fun facts about this celebrated summer tradition.

  1. The picnic trend all began across the pond in France back in 1789 when they opened they’re royal parks to the French public to celebrate the end of the revolution.
  2. We can thank France for the coining of the word ‘picnic’ as it derives from the word en français ‘pique-nique.’
  3. What’s your favourite treat to bring along to a picnic? These days it is a classic bag of crisps, but fifty years ago it was recorded that the most common grub to have at a picnic was a hearty cheese sandwich.
  4. Did you know on average, we as a nation enjoy a colossal 94 million picnics a year? That’s a lot of picnics!
  5. Who doesn’t love a good Scotch egg? Luxury London department store, Fortnum and Mason, have professed accountability for inventing this light snack and they are still one of the store’s best-seller’s today!
  6. ‘If you go down to the woods today you’re sure of a big surprise…’ sound familiar? The known and loved song ‘Teddy Bear’s Picnic’ was originally called ‘The Teddy Bear Two-Step.’

Now, if you’ll excuse me I’m going to spread out my picnic blanket and tuck into my Scotch egg and Quavers.

I'll Have the Duck, with Science on the Side

Do you like eating? Do you like science? Then you’re going to love this!

Created by Chef Jozef Youssef, The Gastrophysics Chef’s Table promises to enhance your senses in a way they never have been before. Situated at Kitchen Theory in Barnet, this stimulating dining experience will play on all of your senses, resulting in a feast for not only your taste buds, but also for your eyes and nose.

You and a group of friends can indulge in an exquisite, multi-sensory 13-course meal, including cocktail and wine pairings – quite the treat indeed! Sample innovative flavour combinations including ‘chocolate, passion fruit and celery,’ which I’m certain tastes better than it sounds, I should hope so anyway as the whole evening is £160 per head. For dinner with a twist, this is a dining opportunity not to be missed.
