LONDONEWCASTLE AT THE ROUNDHOUSE GALA 2015

Sophia

The staff at Londonewcastle were lucky enough to be invited by Rob Soning (Vice Chair) to this year’s charity fundraiser at the Roundhouse in Camden hosted by Radio 1 DJ, Edith Bowman.

Sally Wood – Chairman and ambassador of the Roundhouse enlightened us with what wonderful results the Roundhouse committee help to achieve year after year. The Roundhouse charity raises thousands of pounds to help support disadvantaged young adults, giving them valuable opportunities and guidance throughout.

Guests of the event were spoiled with acts such as Jamie Cullum and Rob Brydon - who performed with the very talented Roundhouse Choir - Eliza Doolittle, Sharleen Spiteri and an amazing acrobatic duo. We heard stories from young people at the heart of the charity about how the Roundhouse has helped them and encouraged their creativity over the years.

Christopher Biggins presented a live auction whereby artwork from Damian Hirst and Noel Fielding were up for grabs, along with luxurious holidays, afternoon tea with Sir Tim Rice and a private lunch with the Monty Python gang. Jeremey Clarkson also contributed a spontaneous prize for bidders, with the promise of a final lap around the Top Gear track.

The highlight of the night by far was witnessing the legendary Ronnie Wood perform with Sterephonics frontman Kelly Jones. Every last guest in the building headed to the dancefloor to enjoy their fantastic version of the Rolling Stones classic ‘I can’t get no satisfaction’. Conrad Shawcross 'Timepiece' at The Roundhouse

Peter A

Following Londonewcastle’s joint sponsorship of the gala back in the spring, the good people of The Roundhouse invited us to the private view and unveiling of Conrad Shawcross’ work ‘TIMEPIECE’ - this year’s Summer Exhibition (August 1st to 25th, actually).

The Conrad Shawcross piece ‘Timepiece’ looms over The Roundhouse

The mechanical piece is in fact a clock (of sorts), playing on the 24 columns around the circular space featuring revolving hands with bright bulbs on each end, suspended from the roof and moving around a large central ‘spike’ (not the technical term) which casts shadows on the floor - like a sundial. Who knows if it tells the time accurately, who actually cares? That’s the point…

Conrad Shawcross ‘Timepiece’ in detail

It’s a simple and powerful piece, fabricated with incredible skill and craftsmanship (4,000 man hours in the studio), thats shines in your eye yet creates a sense of thoughfulness in the vast surroundings.

The magnificent Roundhouse setting

The exhibition is on until 25th August, click here for more details.

Roundhouse 2013 Gala raises £600,000

Londonewcastle

Ray Davies (of The Kinks), Boy George, Heaven 17, Imogen Heap and Eliza Doolittle were a few of the acts that took to the stage to celebrate the Roundhouse 2013 Gala, hosted by Radio 1 DJ Nick Grimshaw.

The night also showcased some of the talented young individuals who benefit from the Roundhouse’s Creative Programme - with the Roundhouse Choir collaborating with Heaven 17 and Imogen Heap; spoken word artist and winner of the 2012 Roundhouse Poetry Slam Hibaq Osman and Roundhouse spoken word tutor Polarbear (a real highlight of the night); hula troupe The Majorettes and the Roundhouse dance/acrobatic troupe, Funk da Cirque.

Harry Enfield and Christie’s Hugh Edmeades took charge of the auction which included some amazing lots - especially works of art; including an original Coldplay Xylobryte artwork (as seen on the cover of the Mylo Xyloto album); an original piece by Antony Gormley - which fetched £40,000 and prompted the artist to stand up and offer to make another identical piece for the same price; pieces by the Chapman Brothers; Conrad Shawcross; Ron Arad; Sir Peter Blake; Rankin; Blur; Marc Quinn a walk-on role in Les Misérables; afternoon tea with award-winning playwright Alan Bennett; meet and greest with Emeli Sandi and One Direction and a working lunch with Lord Sebastian Coe amongst many others.

The event raised over £600,000 to support the vital work the Roundhouse does with 3,000 11-25 year olds every year, helping them to realise their creative potential as well as building confidence and skills to take into their futures. The money raised will also contribute to maintaining the Artistic Programme that engages young people through a diverse and contemporary range of theatre, circus and music.

The evening was jointly sponsored by Londonewcastle and One Housing Group.
