Tom Odell Forest Live 2015 – Bedgebury Pinetum

Sophia

Held by the Forestry Commission, Forest Live is a summer music tour that sees the latest artists performing in the middle of national parks across the country. We were lucky enough to visit the beautiful Bedgebury Pinetum Forest in Kent to see the extremely talented Tom Odell.

Supporting Tom on this occasion was Rae Morris, whos song ‘Love Again’ is featured on the lastest Boohoo.com advert, and young new artist Alfie Connor who we liked so much that we downloaded all of his songs on Spotify then and there.

The gig had a brilliant atmosphere and contained just the right amount of peoplpe. There were food trucks and a bar, and plenty of beautiful countryside to walk around.

Beyond Bread - guilt free gluten-free eating in Fitzrovia

Peter A

Better late than never (and after a prompt from our ever efficient lady in the know, Emma), LN’s resident food neurotic took a trip up Charlotte Place to sample this newish gluten-free bakery simply called Beyond Bread.

Opened in January to be (they say): “A culinary pioneer who – through a range of naturally gluten-free foods – inspires you on a journey to discover new, yet familiar tastes.” It would seem rude not to indulge.

And indulge I did - a chicken and tarragon quiche with salad (for £7.50) and an OMG-I-can’t-believe-it chocolate and custard twist with a sugary glaze. Which as you can seem, was awful…

The shop is open 6 days a week for breakfast and lunch selling a range of goods to take away or eat in (sandwiches, cakes, mince pies, pastries, quiches and loaves), fresh coffee, cold pressed juices and a few other bits and bobs (gluten-free granola for example). They also do dairy-free and vegan.

This is the type of venture that we whole heartedly agree with - and it seems others agree too as the place was nicely busy when we called in. I’ll be back.

This is not a suit

Adrien Sauvage is a very, very busy man. Through his clothes designs over the past year or so, he has crafted a new, groundbreaking approach: Dress Easy.

DE is a philosophy that has put ‘Elegantly Casual’ at the top of the agenda of the best Men’s and Women’s Fashion Editors, on an international level.

At Londonewcastle we appreciate his take on life. It’s informed not only by his relaxed charm but also by his encyclopedic and energetic enthusiasms. Amongst other things, he is inspired by, and accomplished in, Basketball and Filmmaking.

By provoking unorthodoxy and being an engaging conversationalist he has also forged incredible connections with the very best tastemakers.

So never a dull moment with, or for, Sauvage.

Brainwashed in Mayfair

Peter A

On a rainy evening at Opera Gallery in Mayfair, Mr Brainwash launched his latest (London-centric?) Summer show. The artist himself was in attendance along with a well-heeled room of art collectors and non-cynics who buy into the Brainwash way of seeing things.

Whatever your thoughts, you can’t help but smile at some of the works on show - a mix of pop art inspired paintings and - new for this show - sculptures. The steel cut ‘Je t’aime’ sculptures mark a bit of a departure, but stylistically work.

The paintings feature some of the artists previous subjects - including Madonna and Mickey Mouse - and despite the cliche, my favourite piece is this one, of Kate Moss.

You can decide for yourself - the show runs until 10th August.

The Riding House Café Review

Peter A

It’s not new, but The Riding House Cafe on Great Titchfield Street continues to impress. On a busy Thursday night the place was full to the gills with a mostly hip crowd of revellers. They must’ve had a lot to say to each other as the noise was deafening, but not in a bad way. We got the booth table requested during our booking - which is the best - and comfiest - part of the place to be in my opinion.

It depends on what sort of a night you want, but if it’s catching up with old friends then this is a good spot - let the drinks flow and don’t get too heavy about the food. The menu has something for everyone - whether you want to share lighter dishes, go it alone or team up for one of the larger mains. Our table went solo, the ladies opting for slimming superfood salads and the gentlemen indulging in Chicken Shnitzel and the Lobster Lasagne - the latter looking a bit on the mean side, but was accepted without hesitation or complaint.

Needless to say the conversation and buttery Rully from Southern Burgundy flowed and happily we weren’t forced out after a couple of hours to turn the table - a very good thing in my book. The flip side of this is I wish RHC stayed open later - the kitchen stops at 10pm, but it would be a great place for a late or post-theatre dinner. For day birds and not night owls though the place is open all day from Breakfast at 7.30 midweek through Brunch, Lunch and Afternoon sessions. Nice.

Where to relax in London?

Relaxation in London seems to be a thing of the past. Unless you want to get rubbed by someone with candles or incense or sit in the park. I thought to myself that there must be other choices out there and after a bit of a search, there was one that caught my eye….Floatation tanks. Not exactly a new idea, but not widespread enough for a personal suggestion. I went with these people as they were friendly and seem to have been doing it for a while: Floatworks

You simply arrive and after changing and taking a quick shower, step into a large tank in your own personal room. In my opinion, it’s well worth the money (at £45 an hour). Admittedly, it takes a while for you to get used to nearly falling asleep in water, but you get there in the end. And the tank door can be left open if you’re a bit claustrophobic. Or alternatively, if being in a tank isn’t for you then there’s Float rooms.

New Banksy in Wood Green

Peter A

The rumour mill has gone into overload since this new stencil seemingly by Banksy appeared in Wood Green, North London a week or so ago.

New Banksy appears in Wood Green. (Source: The Independent)

Clearly, it has the signature style of the man himself - depicting a child hunched over an old sewing machine making bunting for the impending Queen’s Silver Jubilee celebrations. Could it be saying that we can’t afford to buy the bunting but need to borrow Gran’s old machine to fashion our own material (harking back to rationing post WWII) - or more likely, look at the (often ex-Empire) sweatshops we are promoting by buying this stuff in?

Either way, it’s got noticed, sparked a debate and got us all thinking. Job done.

It's smart to be Smart in central London

Peter A

In this age of financial prudence, it’s clever consumers - or that should be clever commuters - i.e. those that need to drive into central London’s congestion charging zone, who are doing the maths and adding a downsized, tax exempt supermini to their fleet.

However, these premium pedalling driver’s aren’t faced with as much choice as it seems they should be. Naturally, it’s got to have an automatic gearbox and it’s got to be from a premium brand. And despite the brand’s up and downs, that means a Smart Fortwo Coupe.

Smart Fortwo Coupe

Yes, there are other options out there - the cute Fiat 500 TwinAir springs to mind, but its £2,000 more. Others abound, but they are either Diesel powered (not necessary or cost effective for short London commuting) or - as already highlighted - they cost significantly more - either as an outright purchase or running costs.

Naturally the vehicle has its limitations - having only two seats and a tiny boot for example, but that’s irrelevant - a grander vehicle sits at home for weekend manoeuvres.

The Who, the What, the Why.

Peter A

The Who? is Londonewcastle and some friends and guest authors that will pop up from time to time giving us and you their views. The What? is London life. What else? It’s who we are, it’s what we do, it’s what we breath. And for us and above all else, it’s where we live. The Why? is to share our enthusiasm for this greatest city on Earth … its richness, its diversity and its ever changing nature.
