GALLERY 46 is proud to present the work of the winner and finalists of the Philip Jones Griffiths Foundation Award 2017. The Award, started in Philip’s name, exists to reward individual photographers but also to highlight, elevate and support excellent photojournalism. In a world in which we are drowning in images, it is more important than ever to be able to access and recognise photographs of actual value to humanity. The judges this year were Stuart Franklin, John Pilger, Donna Ferrato, Brigitte Lardinois and Katherine Holden. They looked though hundreds of entries from all across the globe with Philip’s ethos in mind; flawless technical ability and composures, critically important subject matter and an ability to ‘go deeper’ than just simply reflecting what is on the surface.

The stories presented here are not just of the highest quality, but also of profound importance tackling issues such as; the Refugee crisis, prisons in the Philippines, turmoil in Venezuela, conflict in Iraq and deprivation in the UK. In addition, the PJG Award 2016 winner, Pablo Piovano will present images from his haunting project on the use of agrotoxins in Argentina, along with a selection of images by the great Philip Jones Griffiths himself.

The exhibition has been made possible by our generous partners ThePrintSpace who have kindly produced and framed all of the prints.

“Content alone is propaganda; form alone is wallpaper.”
