Strange Hinterland will explore the cyclical journey to the end of life. The circle is completed through death, the ultimate relinquishing of pain and human suffering, before the cycle begins again.
The film piece and accompanying installation pieces and photography will have four sections which in turn elucidate the four main themes:
• Death - a great loss and utter devastation which shows the escape into Strange Hinterland. Motifs will include the wrapping and dressing of bodies,
• Loss of self into the landscape and the attempt to erase pain. Motifs will include fleeing into the landscape to escape suffering and the physical sense of falling.
• Passing on gifts that are symbolic of enlightenment and continuation.
• Reincarnation/ renewal into the landscape
The film will make use of a blue/gold light palette conjuring an icy atmosphere with fabulous sunsets and golden shafts of light. I plan to work with flowing fabrics that will conceal and reveal the central figure at different points. The film also seeks to bring into focus the wider issues of crossing borders, race, cultures and philosophies as well as the emotional elements, and renewal through nature. In turn the large scale ’ architectural facade sculptures and small scale models and photographic pieces will seek to heighten the experience within the overall piece.
