Things take a scientific turn this week and the exciting celebration on the Day of the Dead is looming!

A Deeper Understanding

Today (Monday 17th October ) professor Stephen Hawking will be speaking at Imperial College London about his understanding of black holes. No doubt he will also be talking about his recently published book 'Soft hair on black holes' which will most definitely bring us one step closer to comprehending the ins and outs of black holes, and the black hole information paradox. It is unequivocally worth going to as, his international reputation aside, he has been forced to reschedule this talk twice already due to his poor health conditions and who knows when you will get another chance to see one of the worlds most respected and edeucated theoretical phyisicist explain his theories in person.

Día de los Muertos

Translated into English, The Day of the Dead is a Mexican holiday mainly celebrated in the central and southern regions of Mexico. The celebration begins when gates of heaven are opened at midnight on the 31st October, allowing the spirits of all deceased children to reunite with their families for 24 hours, before the spirits of the adults join. The festivities include decorated alters with candles, ceramic skulls, photographs of the loved ones and their favourite foods and treats.

The ritual has been practiced for more than 3000 years, and was first discovered by the Spaniards when they landed in Mexico and witnessed the indigenous people practicing the ritual. As much as the Spaniards tried to eradicate the practice, they failed.

Experience the festivities of Día de los Muertos this year in London, from the 3rd-5th November! Wahaca are putting together a fiesta with a line-up of music, street food, live performances and cocktails at the Vault in Waterloo.
